Understanding Shingles: Causes, Symptoms, and Holistic Relief
Last month, I had the opportunity to experience shingles first-hand. Boo! I don't recommend it. However, if you have to go through it, here are some suggestions to help ease your discomfort.
Shingles, also known as Herpes Zoster, is a viral infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (the same virus responsible for chickenpox). It is characterized by a painful rash and often affects older adults or individuals with weakened immune systems. Conventional treatments involve antiviral medications and Ayurvedic wisdom offers insights into balancing the body’s energies to support healing and relieve symptoms. These two approaches can work well together.
Symptoms of Shingles:
Pain or burning sensation (often before the rash appears - I thought I had burned my back on my heat pad)
Red, blistering rash on one side of the body
Itching or tingling in the affected area
Fatigue, fever, and sensitivity to touch
In some cases, lingering nerve pain known as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN)
Ayurvedic Perspective on Shingles:
In Ayurveda, shingles can be understood as a manifestation of imbalanced Pitta dosha with involvement of Vata. The fiery nature of Pitta, when aggravated, leads to inflammation, burning sensations, and skin eruptions, while Vata contributes to the sharp pain and tingling sensations associated with shingles.
Root Cause in Ayurveda:
Aggravated Pitta Dosha: This governs heat and metabolism in the body. When Pitta becomes aggravated, it leads to inflammation, excessive heat, and burning pain in the skin, which are characteristic of shingles. Emotional stress, spicy foods, or excessive heat can contribute to Pitta imbalance.
Vata Dosha: Vata controls movement and the nervous system. Its imbalance is linked to the nerve pain and tingling sensations experienced during a shingles outbreak. Dryness and erratic energy of Vata contribute to the discomfort.
Ayurvedic treatments aim to pacify Pitta and Vata and soothe the burning, irritation, and pain. This holistic approach addresses not just the symptoms but the underlying imbalances in the body.
Ayurvedic Remedies for Shingles Relief:
Cooling Herbs and Remedies to Pacify Pitta:
Aloe Vera Gel: Applying fresh aloe vera gel to the affected area can help cool inflammation, soothe the rash, and reduce irritation. Aloe vera has a naturally cooling effect, which calms aggravated Pitta.
Sandalwood Paste: Mixing sandalwood powder with rose water to create a paste and applying it on the blisters can provide cooling relief. Sandalwood is renowned for its ability to reduce Pitta-related heat and inflammation.
Neem: Neem leaves have antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and cooling properties. A neem paste or oil can be applied to the rash to reduce inflammation and speed up the healing process.
Coconut Oil: Coconut oil’s cooling and antimicrobial properties make it a great remedy for soothing shingles. Apply it directly to the rash to calm irritation and keep the skin moisturized.
Dietary Recommendations to Balance Pitta and Vata:
Cooling, Hydrating Foods: Focus on consuming cooling, Pitta-pacifying foods like cucumbers, melons, leafy greens, and coconut water. Avoid spicy, fried, and overly salty foods that aggravate Pitta.
Herbal Teas: Drinking cooling herbal teas made with ingredients like fennel, coriander, and mint can help reduce internal heat and inflammation.
Ghee: Consuming small amounts of clarified butter (ghee) can help pacify Vata and Pitta while nourishing the body. Ghee also promotes healing of the skin from within.
Lifestyle Recommendations:
Stress Management: Since stress can exacerbate both Vata and Pitta imbalances, incorporating stress-relief practices is essential. Regular meditation, pranayama (breathwork), and yoga tailored to reduce Pitta (gentle, cooling asanas) can calm both mind and body.
Rest: Shingles often appears when the body’s immunity is compromised. Ample rest is necessary to support recovery. Avoid strenuous activity and keep yourself hydrated.
Oil Massage (Abhyanga): Gentle oil massages with cooling oils like coconut or brahmi oil can help soothe the skin and reduce Vata-related discomfort. Make sure to avoid massaging directly over the affected areas until the blisters heal.
Ayurvedic Approach to Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN):
For those experiencing lingering nerve pain after shingles (PHN), Ayurveda offers remedies to calm Vata and support the nervous system. Ashwagandha, an adaptogenic herb, can strengthen the nervous system and reduce nerve-related discomfort. Bala oil (Sida cordifolia) can be used for external massage to soothe nerve pain, while internally, Triphala can support detoxification and immune health.
Homeopathic Remedies:
In addition, I used Calendula homeopathic cream for the rash and Arnica gel for the referral pain that surrounded the area.
Final Thoughts:
Ayurveda views shingles as an opportunity to restore balance in the body by pacifying aggravated Pitta and Vata doshas. With a combination of cooling remedies, anti-inflammatory herbs, stress management techniques, and lifestyle adjustments, you can support your body's healing process in a holistic and natural way. Remember to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner (I highly recommend Emily Harrison at Citizens of Nature) before starting any herbal treatments, especially if you are already receiving medical care for shingles.
